The dragonfly is depicted in great detail while settled on a loosely depicted plant stem. The wings are built up with twelve layers of gloss varnish to replicate the thickness, transparency and reflective qualities of a real insect wing. The yellow background is a generous application of the artist's favourite colour, spread out like a thick layer of butter.
